Ferrous Metals
For the weld to work both pieces must be ferrous, meaning a magnet must be able to stick to both pieces. Try sticking a magnet to your favorite ornament to see if it can be welded.
Welding Helmet
Eye protection is required while welding because the infared radiation can cause retinal burning. If someone is welding near your home do not look directly at the light. Try raising your palm over your eyes if you can't avoid being in the area
Rod Types
The rod used determines the strength of the weld. For structural metal erection a 7018 rod is typical. However, smaller projects such as fences use a smaller 6011/6013 rod.
